It's hard for me to answer this for a couple of reasons. First off, I've never been very good with social media, so I wouldn't really know what to compare it with. I mean, I never got much engagement on twitter either, so... I did get a lot of likes on my first post, and within a short timeframe, with also quite a few follows, but I suspect that's only because I used the popular introduction hashtag. Followup posts got less engagement.
The other reason why it's difficult for me to answer is because I haven't really used the platform as much as I should have. I kind of loaded it daily for about a month, maybe a bit more (though even during that time I didn't post too much), and then less and less and haven't gone back in weeks now. Mainly because I lack the time, though. Hopefully I'll be able to use it more in the future. I'd still like to give it a chance.
That said, I agree with your assessment. It does seem to have a smaller userbase than other platforms. Still, it could grow. There's been a lot of talk about it, so who knows... It could blow up out of the blue the way TikTok did. Time will tell, I suppose.
Are you getting much engagement on Mastodon? The website looks interesting but it seems like not many people use it.
