Very well put, Alex! Story ideas for me begin as brief flashes of imagery, then I build the plot and characters around it and once I start writing is when the themes tend to appear. Very strange process but so much fun!! Thanks for sharing this.
Yeah, images can do the trick too. And it doesn't need to be a literal image either. Sometimes a lyric in a song will generate a vivid image in my mind that will lead to a story--or maybe just a scene that will later be merged into a bigger concept. Dreams can also be strong sources of such images... Talk about strange ;)
