Quick question. You mentioned that you had to split this in two in order to make it fit in an email. Does substack have a word count limit for each post?
So technically Substack has no limit (that I know of), but Gmail does. And since the majority of subscribers are on Gmail, it's something you have to keep in mind. One cool thing about Substack, though, is that it will warn you when you start getting near that limit.
The limit isn't based on word count, by the way, but on the size of the email. I experimented with various story lengths and noticed I could go comfortably up to 7000 words. Gmail will start clipping a message somewhere between 7000 and 7500 words. That's with 2 banner-sized images. More images and that word count would have to drop quite a bit. Audio or video clips would also significantly increase your message's weight.
This particular story is slightly under 9000 words, which is why I decided to split it.
